When to Call 911 vs. When to Call the Non-Emergency Line
When to Call 911 vs. When to Call the Non-Emergency Line
Knowing the difference can save lives—and resources.
In an emergency, every second counts. But not every situation requires lights, sirens, or a full fire department response. At the Wilton Fire Department, we want to help our community understand the difference between emergency and non-emergency situations—so you know when to call 911, and when to reach out through the proper channels.
Call 911 If There’s Any Immediate Danger
Call 911 if the situation involves:
- Smoke, flames, or fire alarms
- A gas leak or unknown odor
- A car accident with injuries or road blockage
- Someone experiencing a medical emergency
- Downed power lines or arcing wires
- Anything life-threatening or time-sensitive
Not sure? When in doubt, it’s safer to call 911. Dispatchers are trained to assess your situation and route the right resources.
Use the Non-Emergency Line for:
Some concerns still matter, but don’t require an immediate emergency response. For these, call the appropriate non-emergency number, such as the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office: (518) 885-6761, or contact our department directly.
Examples include:
- General questions about the fire department
- Smoke alarm installations or inspections
- Outdoor burning permit requests
- Public event support inquiries
- Reporting past incidents or fire code concerns
- Asking about training or volunteering
Non-emergency calls help keep 911 lines clear for real emergencies. We still want to hear from you—just through the right channel.
Special Note on Fire Alarms
If your fire alarm goes off and you suspect a real emergency, call 911 immediately.
If it’s a known false alarm (burnt toast, low battery, etc.), you can:
- Silence the alarm (if safe to do so)
- Ventilate the area
- Monitor the situation
If you’re ever unsure whether an alarm is false or real—call 911. It’s always better to be safe.
