Volunteer FAQ
Not at all. We welcome individuals with or without prior experience. All required training is provided at no cost to our members.
If you’ve served with another department or completed certified fire training in the past, please inform us during the application process and provide copies of your certificates or training records. We’ll review your credentials to determine how they align with our department’s requirements.
Absolutely. Many of our members work full-time and volunteer when they’re available. Our flexible on-call system is designed to accommodate various schedules.
To be considered an active firefighter with the Wilton Fire Department, all members must complete the Basic Exterior Firefighting Operations (BEFO) course. This course prepares members to operate safely in non-IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health) environments on the fireground.
For those who wish to operate inside burning structures and participate in interior fire suppression efforts, completion of the Interior Firefighting Operations (IFO) course is required. Individuals who complete both BEFO and IFO are classified as Class A Structural Firefighters.
Both courses are taught by New York State-certified fire instructors and are provided at no cost to you.
- BEFO Course: 79 hours
- IFO Course: 49 hours (BEFO is a prerequisite)
Courses are typically scheduled in the evenings and on weekends to accommodate work and family commitments.
We understand that life is busy. That’s why we offer make-up drills most Saturdays to help members stay current with training requirements and maintain flexibility.
Yes. All turnout gear, pagers, and personal protective equipment (PPE) are issued by the department at no cost to our members.
Firefighting can be physically demanding, but we welcome individuals of all fitness levels. To support your wellness and readiness, we provide access to a professional fitness trainer three nights a week—free for members and their families.
There are several important ways to serve beyond interior firefighting, including:
- Apparatus Driver
- Driver/Pump Operator
- Exterior Firefighter
- Fire Police and Scene Support
- Administrative and Community Outreach Roles
Yes. All new members serve a 6-month probationary period, during which they participate in training, attend department meetings, and become familiar with our operations and culture before being granted full active status.
There is no set hourly requirement. Members respond to calls when available, attend training as often as possible, and participate in department events and meetings when they can. Every contribution is appreciated.
Wilton Fire is actively involved in the community. We attend local events, provide fire prevention programs in schools, host open houses, and support public education initiatives throughout the year. It’s a vital part of our mission and identity.
Absolutely. We fully support all members who wish to pursue additional training and professional development. Whether it’s vehicle operations, technical rescue, officer development, or hazardous materials response, there are dozens of opportunities available through the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control (OFPC).

Voices from the Inside
Changing the culture of the fire service sometimes takes time […] If somebody can look at what I’m doing and mimic it or take my ideas and help their little chunk of the world, then that just helps the fire service in New York state overall, and that’s what it’s all about!
